OCSO Master Deputy Ryan Brigham of Orange County, Florida Sheriff’s Office is connecting with Deaf Children in the community in American Sign Language.
Many deaf and hard of hearing students don’t often get the chance to have a real conversation with a police officer in their own language. Some deaf and hard of hearing student feel disconnected from certain opportunities as they grow up in their school days. That didn’t stop Ryan Brigham though.
Deputy Brigham grew up learning American Sign Language because his father is deaf. He may be the only law enforcement officer in the county who is fluent in ASL. So when he visits Lake Sybelia, the students in the program get something rare: a conversation without an interpreter. This is an important factor that more hearing people should explore learning American Sign Language (ASL), you never know who’s live you can impact in a positive way.
During his visits, he spends time with the kids, brings small gifts, and lets them sit inside his patrol vehicle. These moments help the children feel seen and understood in a way that makes a difference.
Watch for yourself the happy faces of the children feeling connected with the police officer in their native language.
